First Impressions & Essential First Steps
Your arrival in Tashkent sets the tone for your experience.

• Airport Transfer
• Currency
• Visa & Registration
Ensure your visa is in well order in advance. Upon arrival, timely registration with the local authorities is crucial. This often needs to be done within a few days of your entry.
* If you find the bureaucratic process intimidating, our team at Tashkent Concierge is well-versed in local regulations and can provide visa and registration support, simplifying this critical step
The busy Tashkent International Airport (TAS) can be an exciting first encounter. The exit from Arrival terminal of TAS is often crowded with local drivers trying to gather more clients for a ride, make sure you do choose your driver wisely and not overpaying for your ride. Arranging a reliable airport transfer is highly recommended for a smooth start.
* Pre-booked services ensure a stress-free journey to your accommodation.
The local currency is the Uzbek Sum (UZS). While credit cards are increasingly accepted in major establishments, having some cash for smaller notes or local markets is always wise. The best choice is to exchange at banks’ exchange offices since they usually have the best rate. ATM are often offering lower rate than offices. Just keep in mind that banks’ working hours are from 9:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday. Exchange offices in major hotels work with different schedule, contact the hotel to get details.

• Connectivity
For communication, purchasing a local SIM card (e.g., Ucell, Beeline, Mobiuz) immediately in the airport itself is a must. Choose your package on your phone wisely because you will be using your mobile network outside of your hotel. Staying online is very crucial on streets of Tashkent. It is also suggested to have your phone’s settings checked since some times additional settings are required for cellular network to function.

Tashkent offers different housing options, from modern apartments to large houses with gardens. The choice often depends on your family size, lifestyle, and closeness to your work or schools.

Popular Expat Neighborhoods
1. Mirzo-Ulugbek District & Buyuk Ipak Yuli Metro Station (formerly Maxim Gorkiy): Known for green spaces, good infrastructure, and neighborhood of international schools. If you go further from city center, it's recomended to get to know the transport line and key landmarks for better local orientation.
2. Yunusabad District: A large, diverse district with a mix of older and newer buildings, offering various price points. The structure of the district is clear until you get away from the city center. We advise to learn the popular landmarks.
3. Chilanzar District: Well-established, with good public transport links and local amenities. The closer part of the district to the city center is great for setteling, however if you go further the infrstructure starts getting less convenient.

Driving
While possible, traffic can be chaotic, and local driving habits differ. An international driving permit is typically required.

Uzbekistan is renowned for its warm hospitality. Understanding a few cultural nuances will significantly enhance your experience.

• Dress Code
While Tashkent is modern, modest dress is appreciated, especially when visiting religious sites.
• Hospitality (Makhalla):
If invited to an Uzbek home, it's a great honor. Bring a small gift (sweets, couple of breads). Shoes are typically removed at the entrance. Be prepared for heavy amounts of food and tea!
• Greetings
A handshake is common for men; women often greet each other with a light hug or by placing a hand on the heart. Elders are highly respected.
• Language
Uzbek is the state language, but Russian is widely spoken, especially in Tashkent and among older generations. Learning a few basic phrases in either will be greatly appreciated.
* Assalomu Alaykum (Uzbek) / Здравствуйте (Russian) - Hello
* Rahmat (Uzbek) / Спасибо (Russian) - Thank you
* Ha/Yo'q (Uzbek) / Да/Нет (Russian) - Yes/No

Access to reliable healthcare is a common concern for expats.
Medical Facilities
Tashkent has a mix of public and private clinics. Many expats choose private clinics and international medical centers like the International Medical Center (IMC) for their staff, modern equipment, and English-speaking doctors.

Insurance
Comprehensive international health insurance is highly recommended. Clarify direct billing options with your provider.
Pharmacies are common, and many medications are available over-the-counter. You should note that not every pharmacy has English speaking staff, sometimes its better to keep your translator ready.
